The History of Australian Racing project was first conceptualised back in the 1970s when the Victoria Racing Club dared to dream a project which would have no parallel in the world.

The artist

The artist chosen to capture this history was Harold Freedman – an artist of some repute based in Melbourne. He had taught many of Australia's best known painters and himself had had served a considerable period as Victoria's State artist.

The books

As the mural unfolded so too did the need to document the racing history and thus The History of Australian Thoroughbred Racing emerged. Volume I was published in 1987; Volume II in 1990 and in Volume III in 2008. The writer engaged throughout was Dr. Andrew Lemon.
